How to Hang Wallpaper — Step by Step Guide
Follow our straightforward steps for a quality finish. Always read the instructions supplied with your wallpaper.
Tools You’ll Need
- Spirit level or plumb line
- Measuring tape & pencil
- Sharp snap‑off knife & scissors
- Pasting brush or roller (for paste‑the‑paper)
- Roller & tray (for paste‑the‑wall)
- Smoothing brush or plastic smoother
- Seam roller
- Clean damp sponge / cloth
- Step ladder
Preparation
- Strip old coverings and fill holes. Sand smooth.
- Ensure walls are dry, clean, and sound. Seal porous surfaces with a primer/sealer.
- Turn off power. Remove faceplates where safe; loosen radiators if needed.
- Mark a perfectly vertical start line with a level/plumb line, usually 52 cm from the corner (the width of one roll).
Method 1 — Paste the Wall
Ideal for non‑woven wallpapers (most of our range).
- Cut the first length allowing 5–10 cm extra at the top and bottom.
- Roll adhesive directly onto the wall from ceiling to skirting, covering slightly beyond the next strip.
- Apply the dry wallpaper to the pasted wall, align with your vertical line, and smooth from centre outwards.
- Trim excess at top and bottom with a sharp knife and straight edge.
- Match the pattern for the next length; butt join edges (don’t overlap). Use a seam roller lightly.
- Wipe paste residue gently with a damp sponge as you go.
Method 2 — Paste the Paper
Common for traditional paper-backed wallpapers.
- Cut the first length with allowances as above. Place face down on a pasting table.
- Brush paste evenly from centre to edges. Fold ("book") pasted sides together without creasing.
- Allow the recommended soak time (usually 5–10 minutes). Check the roll label.
- Hang to your vertical line, smooth outwards, then trim top and bottom.
- Repeat, carefully matching the pattern and managing soak time consistently.
Around Obstacles
- Sockets & switches: Power off and remove from the wall. Hang over, then cut a small X and trim carefully.
- Windows & doors: Hang long, then trim to reveals with a sharp blade.
- Internal corners: Split the strip: allow ~2 cm onto the next wall, then start a new strip plumbed from the corner.
Finishing Touches
- Check all seams. Use a seam roller lightly if needed.
- Avoid heavy rubbing on textured or metallic inks.
- Keep the room at a stable temperature while drying.
