How Much Wallpaper Do I Need? UK Room Calculator Guide
Share
One of the most common questions we get asked is: how many rolls of wallpaper do I need? It's an important one — order too few and you risk running out mid-job, order too many and you've wasted money. This guide walks you through exactly how to calculate wallpaper for any room, with worked examples for the most common UK room sizes.
The Quick Answer
For most standard UK rooms:
- Feature wall only — 2 rolls
- Small bedroom (box room, single) — 5 rolls
- Average double bedroom — 6 rolls
- Large bedroom or living room — 8 rolls
- Hallway — 4–6 rolls depending on length
Each of our wallpaper rolls covers 5.3sqm and measures 10.05 metres long x 0.53 metres wide.
How to Calculate Wallpaper Rolls — Step by Step
If you want an accurate figure for your specific room, follow these steps:
Step 1 — Measure the perimeter of your room
Measure the width of each wall and add them together. Don't subtract for doors and windows unless they take up a very large proportion of the wall — it's better to have a little extra than to run short.
Example: A room with walls measuring 3.5m + 3.5m + 4m + 4m = 15 metres perimeter
Step 2 — Measure the height of your room
Measure from skirting board to ceiling. Most UK rooms are between 2.2 and 2.6 metres high.
Example: Room height = 2.4 metres
Step 3 — Calculate the total wall area
Multiply the perimeter by the height.
Example: 15m x 2.4m = 36sqm total wall area
Step 4 — Divide by the roll coverage
Each of our rolls covers 5.3sqm. Divide your total wall area by 5.3 to get the number of rolls needed before pattern matching waste.
Example: 36 ÷ 5.3 = 6.8 rolls
Step 5 — Round up and add one for the pattern repeat
Always round up to the nearest whole number, then add one extra roll to account for pattern matching waste and any mistakes.
Example: Round up to 7, add 1 = 8 rolls
Pattern Repeat — Why It Matters
The pattern repeat is the distance between one point in the design and where the exact same point appears again. A larger pattern repeat means more waste as you need to match the pattern at every join.
Our wallpapers list the pattern repeat in the product description. Here's a general guide:
- No repeat (plain or textured) — very little waste, calculate precisely
- Small repeat (under 20cm) — add 1 extra roll
- Medium repeat (20–45cm) — add 1–2 extra rolls
- Large repeat (over 45cm) — add 2 extra rolls
All of our wallpapers list the exact pattern repeat so you can calculate accurately before ordering.

Should I Order Extra Rolls?
Yes — always order at least one extra roll beyond your calculation. Here's why:
Dye lots vary between print runs. Wallpaper is printed in batches, and the colour can vary very slightly between batches. If you run out and need to order more, there's no guarantee the new rolls will match exactly. Having a spare roll from the same batch protects you.
Mistakes happen. Even experienced decorators sometimes mis-cut a drop or damage a length. Having a spare roll means a mistake doesn't become a disaster.
Future repairs. If you ever need to repair a section — after hanging a picture or moving furniture — having a matching roll from the same batch is invaluable.
The cost of one extra roll is far less than the cost of a room that doesn't match.
Tips for Reducing Waste
- Start from the centre of the main wall and work outwards — this ensures the pattern is balanced and reduces waste at the edges
- Plan your drops before you start — lay out the rolls and plan where each drop will fall relative to the pattern repeat before you begin cutting
- Keep off-cuts — short lengths cut from the top or bottom of drops can sometimes be used above doors and windows
Order a Sample First
Before calculating and ordering your full quantity, order a sample to check the colour in your own home. Lighting conditions affect how wallpaper looks significantly, and it's much better to discover a colour isn't right before you've ordered 8 rolls.
